I was watched Pulp Fiction today. I have to say, that’s one messed up movie. People were dying left and right, with nobody particularly caring about anything or anybody at all except themselves. That’s not to say I didn’t like the movie. It is, perhaps, one of my favorite movies of all time. The way the story is told is just so unique, that characters so dysfunctional that it makes for one of the most interesting yet horrific movies I’ve ever seen.
There is one thing about Pulp Fiction that really stood out to me. Pretty much every main character at one point in the movie goes to the bathroom. Vincent (John Travolta) goes three times during the course of the movie, Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) goes once, Mia (good ‘ol Uma Therman) goes (granted, it was only to snort coke, but still…) and several times some of the more minor characters go to the bathroom. I found that mildly entertaining, considering that in most movies the characters appear to be devoid of the need to ever have to release their bodily waste.
Anyway, if you haven’t already seen it, see it. Now. Because I said to.
…thats because the sub-theme to the movie is toilets/RRs. Whenever Vincent goes to the RR, he reads a small paperback book, or a “pulp fiction”.
The other theme to the movie is ofcourse the “briefcase” which holds the human soul, hence why it glows, and hence why it glows the same color in the beggining when that one dude is shot down to death.
Actually, in the last scene Vincent is holding a newspaper, not a small paperback book. I think.
As for the briefcase, I don’t think that the characters would have been very interested in a human soul. They wouldn’t “ooh” and “ahh” over a human soul. I think what was in the briefcase is more materialistic, not necessarily money or gold bars, but the representation of wealth; something that everybody wants.
It’s not a soul or money, it’s Macguffen ;-)
Seriously though, the whole point is that anything Tarentino could have thought of isn’t a good idea, hence the mystery. He realized that it’s such a significant thing in the case, it could only be something made up with the viewers imagination. So when Brian sees it, it’s money, and when Silent Pea sees it, it’s a soul.
For me, it is the shiniest thing in the world, whatever that may be.
